Time for Reflection

What impact has this episode had on your thoughts about the way the Enlightmenment shaped our current freedoms?

THE STATE OF HUMAN NATURE: PEACEFUL OR CHAOTIC?

For John Locke, the State of Nature was not of a state of war, but a state of freedom. Hobbes’ State of Nature is chaotic precisely because people are essentially equal and will perform the same actions in their self-interest.

Do you agree with Locke that people are mostly peaceful, or do you agree with Hobbes that people cannot know good and evil, and can only live togehter under the power of a common master?
